Dubuque is a contemporary city with Victorian
charm.  Situated in the beautiful, natural location
along the Mississippi river, Dubuque is known for
its hills and Victorian Mansions, Dubuque is
sometimes compared to San Francisco.  Settled in
1788 by French Canadian fur trader and early
entrepreneur Julien Dubuque, this has been a
vibrant river city with a population of 62,000
people and a county population of nearly 90,000.
Dubuque is the seventh largest city in the state of
Iowa, and the oldest settlement west of the
Mississippi River.  Historically, Dubuque was a
center for fur trading, mining, agriculture, and
steam boating.  In the last century, the Dubuque
area has witnessed further growth in the software
development, printing, publishing and meat
processing, as well as manufacturing of medical
products, heavy equipment, furniture, toys and
various industrial products.  In 1996, Dubuque was
named an All-American City & Community Finalist
by the National Civic League and in 1995,
Dubuque was one of five communities out of
240 applicants to receive the Great American Main
Street Award from the National Trust for Historical
Preservation.  Dubuque is the Masterpiece on the
Mississippi.
